Single purpose design, multi-use
The Ziggo Dome is a concert hall in Amsterdam Zuidoost, near the Amsterdam ArenA. With a seating capacity of 17,000, it is the ideal size for global tours by international artists. It fills the gap between, on the one hand, the ArenA (maximum capacity 50,000) and the Gelredome (Arnhem, 30,000), which are too large for many concerts, and, on the other hand, the Heineken Music Hall (Amsterdam, 5,000) and the Ahoy (Rotterdam, 10,000), which are often too small.
The Ziggo Dome was designed by BenthemCrouwel architects with the starting point that it should be easily adaptable for multi use. It is in principal intended for amplified music concerts but can also accommodate sports events. Tennis courts, an ice rink or an Olympic swimming pool are among the possibilities. The aim was to achieve sublime acoustics and to prevent acoustic vibrations from transmitting outside by means of the elevations that enclose the concert hall like a bell jar. The exterior elevations are provided with 120,000 LED lights, as a result of which the building functions as one huge video screen and is a striking presence, particularly at night.
The building functions like a well-oiled machine. All of the facilities for concert-goers, such as cloakrooms, toilets, bars and restaurant, are on the same level as the auditorium floor and are open plan. The corridors and the foyer are wide so that crowds can move in and out quickly and in order to optimize circulation there are no litter bins. Cleaning takes place automatically with machines that move through the corridors, foyer and auditorium after concerts have ended. (ARCAM/MS)
